In-store Bakery
Our bakery: probably the oldest in Ireland
In the 1840s, Jeremiah Cullinane operated a food store and bakery at our premises at 26 Main Street. During those bleak years, as Famine stalked the land, he won a special place in the hearts of the people by allowing them each day to use his bakery to make bread after he had finished baking his own.
Today, six generations later, our vans deliver fresh bread and cakes every day to shops and supermarkets all over West Cork from our ultra-modern, solar-heated bakery.
Our emphasis has always been on quality and consistency, both of which have been achieved by working carefully for the past forty years under the guidance of our Master Baker and Master Confectioner, Denis McSweeney, a local man who perfected his craft while working in Westminster, London, during the 1960s.
As one of the few independent bakeries left in West Cork, we are immensely proud of what we do and have no hesitation in saying that we probably produce some of the best bakery and confectionery products you will find anywhere.
Three years ago we made a major investment in our bakery, creating a state-of-the-art facility with new energy-efficient ovens and refrigeration units that compliment the facility’s new solar power heating system. We believe this investment will help to secure jobs in the Skibbereen area and consolidate the future of the bakery.
In recent years we have introduced a small bread baking section behind the cake counter. Our Polish bakers make wonderful crunchy cobs, farmhouse and bloomer loaves from scratch seven days a week.
We also make a host of specialty breads including spelt, ciabatta, granary, french sticks and different varieties of focaccias , fruit sodas and bracks .
Fields are well noted for their fantastic array of fresh cream pastries, buns and wonderfully rich fruit cakes. Handmade on a daily basis with the finest ingredients. Visit the cake counter and indulge, if you cant wait why not have one of the sweet treats which are sold in the coffee shop.
